Tempted into doing a 45-minute endurance race by a waived registration fee, Sunday 30th June saw me join the grid for the 750MC Roadsports event on the Donington GP circuit. This race was run between the two Toyoto MR2 Championship sprint races I was doing on the same day and I was to be sharing the grid with fellow BRSCC Porsche Championship drivers JM Littman and Nick Perks (sharing JM’s Boxster) and owner of Track Focused team and long-time motorsport friend Sean Cooper who shared a BMW Z3 with Matt Cherrington.
Qualifying showed promise with me landing 15th place on the 22-car grid, just 0.38 seconds shy of Sean and Matt’s Z3 putting me P4 in my class. I made a reasonable start and grabbed a couple of places before Craners; later in the opening lap I had a moment at the Fogarty Esses, removing some of the paint from a corner marker (see the video).
I pitted very late – just before the pit window closed in fact – and this caused an issue after the race where I was hauled before the Clerk of the Course (for the second time that day) as they believed my pitstop was too short. I didn’t really have time to challenge the decision but Matt from Rogue took the data card from my VBox and headed to Race Control, adamant that he’d timed me correctly. Fortunately he was successful and I avoided a 30-second penalty.
Sean and Matt’s Z3 suffered a suspension issue very late in the race and therefore didn’t finish, so at time of writing, I finished 2nd in class – effectively my highest ever result – behind Rob Horsfield’s MR2.
Here are my in-car videos from the race, split where I took the compulsory 1-minute pitstop. As usual, click through to watch them on YouTube at 480p resolution:
I’m not going to report on my two MR2 Championship races because the results were too embarrassing to mention. The only good things to come out of it were completing two more races and having a great battle with another car for virtually the entire second race.
My thanks go to Patrick, Matt and the guys and girls at Rogue Motorsport for running me in both cars. I will return to the Roadsports series at Silverstone on Saturday 24th August.
